Travis James
Instructor

Most of Travis James’ professional experience in mental health came while working within a Portland-area health network.  There, Travis served as a mental health chaplain fellow and sat on six interdisciplinary clinical teams.  Travis collaborated with the network’s psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, primary-care providers and nursing staff to develop and deliver individualized mental-health-care plans for patients. He facilitated several outpatient and inpatient mental-health groups and classes. Travis also accrued some mental-health experience while working within a health-care network in Ohio, where he served as a critical-care chaplain.  He assisted with the Mental Health First Aid effort in Michigan.

Travis recognizes the importance of reducing stigma surrounding mental-health issues and of equipping people with the knowledge and tools they require to recognize a mental-health need and offer aid to others experiencing mental-health challenges or crises.  In a broader mental-health-care system that can dehumanize individuals, Travis is proud of MA Company’s aim to work with organizations intent on cultivating mentally healthy workplaces, and he appreciates the way its efforts honor our shared humanity and collective connection.

Travis earned a bachelor’s degree in biblical studies from Calvary Chapel Bible College in Murrieta, Calif., and a master of divinity degree from Andrews Theological Seminary in Michigan.  While enrolled in those institutions, Travis studied in Austria, Hungary, Israel, Italy, Jordan and Romania.  He completed internship, residency and fellowship clinical-education units with the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education, known as ACPE.  Travis is a Mental Health First Aid instructor certified by the National Council for Mental Wellbeing.
